TO MAKE A PHOTO LOOK LIKE A PENCIL SKETCH

.) Open any .jpg in PhotoShop.

.) Determine what part of the image you want to keep for Sketching (just the face and hair of a whole portrait for instance). Then activate the DODGE TOOL at 100% exposure and, with a large brush size, use this to eliminate everything but the Face and Hair. To dodge out the dark areas, use the Range Option SHADOWS, then switch to HIGHLIGHTS to eliminate the lightened areas to White. Zoom in the remaining area, (the face and the hair), and use a smaller brush to Dodge out to border details.

.) Now use the Dodge tool with a 50 size brush at 35% exposure to lighten the Skin and Hair.

.) Use Image >Adjustments > Invert (CTRL+I) to get a Negative look.

.) Go Image >Mode >GrayScale >OK

.) Press CTRL+ I to return to the positive image.

.) After changing the Background Layer name to Layer 0, double click it, and set the Blend Mode to SCREEN to lighten the image.

.) Now go Filter >Stylize >Emboss - -OK. Go Edit >Fade >Emboss -- maybe 35%.

.) Go Filter >Sharpen > Unsharp Mask, and set to 18 50 0.

.) Go Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast, and set +35 and +22-- you can experiment!

.) You can now Crop the image to size, and Flatten and save to disk.
